Frequently Asked Questions
What does a typical session look like?
Each session usually begins with a brief discussion. I will ask a few questions for the purpose of conversation, but ultimately, it is the athlete who will do most of the talking. From here, we will work together to formalize an outline for how the rest of the time will be spent. There is no set structure, although typically the first hour is spent discussing certain topics that will later be used for homework and general application. We will also combine some breath work to help relax the system, and this usually leads to further discussions on the benefits of mental and emotional well-being. The final 30 minutes are used for relaxation, and energy healing (Reiki) is applied. This is a nice way to finish off the session.

Is it similar to therapy?
Yes and no. I am not a therapist, but I do work with athletes to help them improve certain aspects of their lives. However, the method that I use is my own, and the ultimate goal is to promote self-empowerment. While I am happy to work with athletes until they reach a certain level of comfort within themselves, my wish for them is that they reach this stage as soon as possible. Some athletes, however, upon reaching their initial goal, decide to go deeper and focus on improving other areas of their athletic performance.

Do you mainly work with soccer athletes?
While I naturally have a connection with soccer players due to the experience gained while playing and coaching, I work with all types of athletes. My service is not sport-specific, as it focuses on the mental and emotional approach to performance. Therefore, whether it's soccer or football, basketball or baseball, tennis or hockey, lacrosse, track, or swimming, the work remains the same. I don't need to understand the rules and nuances of each sport to provide athletes with the benefits of my service.

What is Reiki?
A Japanese tradition of energy healing. Translated, Reiki can be broken down as Rei (unseen, spiritual, universal) and Ki (energy, life force). Combined, they can mean 'soul energy' or 'spirit energy'. The essence, however, is perhaps better captured when described as 'universal life energy'. Reiki is often thought of as a relaxation technique that balances the human energy system. A balanced system provides the foundation for healing to take place on a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level. From a physical point of view, Reiki helps bring the body into balance, which positively impacts physical ailments. On a mental level, Reiki can help with stress so that clarity may arise. On an emotional level, it can assist with bringing balance to a person's mood and overall state of being. And on a spiritual level, Reiki provides seekers with an opportunity for growth.

How does energy healing work?
The energetic frequency produced during Reiki works with the body to promote self-healing. The majority of today's illnesses, for example, can be attributed to issues with the immune system, and so when the body cannot remove something it recognizes as a problem, there is an immediate knock-on effect that causes other areas to operate below their optimum level. This therefore leads to the bodily experience of illness and/or pain. Raising the frequency (energy) of the body increases the speed at which the immune system operates. At the same time, negative toxins (that the body is attempting to fight) are gradually eliminated and replaced with new, replenished cells. In effect, healing energy can reprogram cells in the body and realign their frequencies back to their natural, healthy state. This then serves to promote positive regeneration. The theory is that when cells are immersed in their most resonant and natural energetic frequency, they will self-energize, which in turn creates a harmonic action. This has a positive impact on the surrounding areas of the body, as each cell is able to best protect itself and operate at its full potential.

How quickly will I see results from the energy healing?
The honest answer is that every person and every session are different. It also depends on how the work is being measured. As a general rule, most clients will experience the more commonly known effects, such as relaxation and improved clarity, immediately after their first session. There are often further experiences over the course of the next few days. Sleep improvement and/or changes in the dream state might also occur during this time. What's important to understand is that energy works in a multitude of ways that make it extremely intelligent, and we are yet to know the full scope of its capabilities.

Is it painful?
No. While some internal or external sensations may be experienced during Reiki, the placement of the hands is only that of a very light touch. It is also non-intrusive.

What happens after a session?
Once the energy transmission is finished, there will be a few moments of stillness before the body re-engages itself through movement. After this point, drinking water is suggested. Within 24 hours, I usually check in via text to see how things are going. For youth athletes, and depending on what goals have been set, I may also reach out again a few days later to check in and see if homework is being completed!

What should I wear?
Comfortable, light clothing is fine. There is no set requirement.

How long does a session last?
Typically, sessions last for 90 minutes and are generally broken down into two segments. The first 60 minutes are usually devoted to analysis and performance-related discussions. The final 30 minutes or so are set aside for energy healing (Reiki).

How many sessions do you recommend?
My goal is to create the best possible conditions for self-empowerment and overall well-being. In an ideal world, my athletes would realize this after a single session. The truth is, it is my intent and wish for them to receive whatever serves their highest good. For example, an athlete may have some anxiety about an upcoming game or event. And so, understandably, this would be their main and only concern. Other athletes, however, might have longer-term confidence issues, which will naturally take more time to work through. Therefore, perhaps the best thing to do is schedule a single session, see how things go, and then decide if further sessions might be worthwhile.
